If you plan on hiring a home roofing contractor, do your research. You want to make sure your contractor is qualified. Many people use inexperienced roofers or even scam artists and end up paying thousands of dollars to cover repairs.

How can you avoid becoming a victim of lousy roofing services?  Below we discuss several techniques for you to use when choosing a roofing contractor.

Look into their place of business.

Does the contractor use a permanent office address? If not, they could be running a scam or they might have questionable business practices. If they are an independent contractor, they should still have an official phone number and office address.

Make Sure They are Licensed

A great resource for contractor research is the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). You can use this resource to look up home improvement professionals, discover if they are licensed and find out about their complaint disclosure. Additionally, if you have poor service or you are scammed, you can file a complaint with the CSLB.

Look up reviews for the roofer.

Have they serviced a lot of happy customers? If they have consistent negative reviews, be sure to find another contractor.

Bonus Tip: Another way to get a sense of the contractor’s history is to contact the Better Business Bureau and find out if there are any complaints.

Make sure the contractor offers a warranty.

What type of warranty does the roofer offer? Make sure that you are comfortable with what is covered. If your roof cracks and you are not covered for either repair or replacement, you will have to pay the entire bill yourself. Many roofers offer a warranty on the products used but will not cover the installation and labor associated with it. It is wise to ask the contractor how they handle post-installation issues.

Make sure you have a detailed contract.

Put your needs in a bulleted list and obtain a timeline on how long the project will take. The products used should be written in the contract as well as the costs (in addition, you should look up what products they use to find out if they are high or low quality). The costs for labor should also be included in a list format.

If you follow these tips while you look for a licensed home roofing contractor, you can avoid the hassle of faulty service and-or scams.
